Artichokes Lost Garage Songs

This previously unseen video features the out-takes from the Artichoke's Garage Video, a lively and weird no-budget video features San Francisco's eclectic eighties band performing live in a garage in the City's Richmond District over one weekend in 1983. Note: These songs were out-takes for good reasons. We recommend viewing the Artichokes Garage Video before these out-takes. Now available online for the first time on YouTube and this website.

The Artichokes Live at Ollie's in 1983

The Artichokes performing the songs So Ugly and Slippery Things circa 1983 live at Ollie's Radcliffe Hall, a lesbian night club in Oakland . The video may have been shot during the sound check. The bands Arkansas Man and Good Dog (an excellent band that included guitarist Will Bernard) were also on the bill that night. 064 recalls that the show was one of their best with supportive club staff, a good sound system and lights and a small but enthusiastic crowd. The venue was too good to last, so it was not surprising that the club closed or stopped doing music shows shortly after our show.

Do not adjust your set, the sound is a bit distorted in a way that even Izotope's RX software couldn't repair.

My Father Music Video by Clark Gardner and the Artichokes

Shot at the same time (1983) and place as the Artichoke's Garage Video, this video features the Artichokes backing Clark Gardner on vocals singing about his father. Gary Kline did the cool lighting.

The Artichoke's Agricultural Disasters music video

As the eighties progressed, the Artichokes evolved/devolved from a new wave band into a free/noise improvisation ensemble. In this video from 1985, a recording of an improvisation by the Artichokes is paired with documentary footage of natural disasters and agricultural accidents. The band included 064 on guitar, Wendy Bauer on vocals and keyboard, Bruce Fraser on bass and Chapman Stick and Kevin T. Smith on drums (including Simmons electronic drums).

The Artichoke's I Live by the Freeway music video

This no-budget music video from 1985 was the first music video that guitarist/composer 064 Freeman shot and edited. The song features guest artist Steve MacKay (Stooges, Violent Femmes, Commander Cody) on sax. The Artichokes on this recording were 064 Freeman on guitar and vocals, Wendy Bauer on vocals, Bruce Fraser on bass and Kevin T. Smith on drums and vocals.

The song is from the band's "I Live by the Freeway" album originally released by Oranj Productions on audio cassette in 1983. The full album is planned for a release very soon
