Noise Nacht TV

Rare and Obscure TV Show from 1987 Featured Cutting Edge Electronic, Ambient, Industrial, Experimental, Noise and Electro-Acoustic Music

Noise Nacht TV was created and produced in 1987 by Kim Cascone, a composer and performer of electronic music (PGR, Heavenly Music Corporation) who is known for his releases in the ambient, industrial and electro-acoustic genre on his record company, Silent Records. The TV show was an outgrowth of a series of live events he produced featuring a variety of noise, experimental and electro-acoustic music performers.

Kim Cascone started Silent Records in 1985 when he released "Silence" the first album by his group PGR. The next release, the Haters' "In the Shade of Fire," was released shortly after. Although Silent Record's music was often associated with the industrial scene, Kim noted in a FAD magazine article that he “...wanted to convey something of beauty, of more subtlety, something more eternal. That is why I called the first record ‘Silence’." (FAD magazine)

Silent Records went on to release recordings by Architects Office, Eddie Prevost / Organum, Meterpool, The Hafler Trio, Merzbow/Asmus Tietchens, Pelican Daughters, Jeff Grienke, Psychic TV, Elliott Sharp, Heavenly Music Corporation and many more.

Noise Nacht TV was produced at San Francisco's public access television station. Oranj Production's composer/musician 064 Freeman was on staff at the station and volunteered his services as the show's editor and directed the segments shot in the public access studio.

The look of the program reflects the state of video technology in 1987. At that time, broadcast quality equipment was not accessible or affordable for most artists and musicians. Many of the grassroots video makers of the time worked with low budget video's technical limitation and quirks to turn the low resolution, noisy and glitchy images into a new art form rather than attempting the impossible task of creating a perfectly controlled and refined image. Video feedback, fast, glitchy edits, unsteady camera moves, and effects created with the Video Toaster (a video processor that ran on an Amiga computer) were among the tools and techniques of the day. The funky style that resulted perfectly suits much of the experimental/ambient/noise music heard on Noise Nacht TV.
